Just Breathe By Pearl Jam

I started swimming around the age of 10. I was thought by a swimming instructor and so were my two younger siblings and we all started swimming at different ages. It was on every Saturday afternoon and I quitted swimming when I passed my gold test. I remember my first lesson where I was quite scared of drowning but I just told myself to stay calm and JUST BREATHE. My mother told me to continue to gold star but I see no point in getting it and I was lazy. My fastest 100m time is 2 minutes and 28 seconds and that was when I was swimming for my gold test which was when I was about 12 years old. My borther Akashah has taken his gold star certificate last year and he is alos in water polo so that makes him a better swimmer than me. My younger sister, Shahzani, is about to take her gold star test in a few months' time.

The most irritating about swimming for me is that I never really learned how to swim freestyle and butterfly. I was always the last when the coach told us to swim freestyle. Until now, I still do not know if I should bend my elbows when it's in the water, bend my knees and feet. After watching a few videos at youtube, I found out that my body needs to twist in accordance to its own axis and that I also needed to look forward when my head is in the water. I never learned butterfly because my coach never even thought me and I really regretted not asking him.

When I go swimming, I realize that my body is more toned. Compared to gym, let's take for example the scenario where you carry only dumbbells, your arm size would increase, however for swimming, the whole body is toned and thatis what I like about swimming. It also increases my stamina, reduces stress and also enlarges our lung capacity. With huge lung capacity, you have more endurance, blow wind instruments and sing better. For me, the best thing about swimming is that you do not sweat. The worst thing though, there is never the perfect goggles for me. Water will always seep through it. Even if I can swim without goggles, it is bad for my eyes because of the chloroform present in swimming pools and also the salt in the sea.

These are surely moments when I was swimming. When my family and I went for a vacation at Penang, my father, Akashah and me went for a swim at the hotel's swimming pool. Back then, we didn't know how to swim so our father warned us not to swim without his advice. I and Akashah were at the edge of the swimming pool holding onto the edge, but Aka, being smart, decides to go for a swim and then losses his breathe. Adding on to his intelligence, Aka dragged me along and so I was also in the midst of drowning. Luckily my father came to the rescue.

When I was in secondary two, all secondary two students had to attend basic swimming classes. The advanced were in different classes from them. One thing I remember from there was that I was just about three seconds away from Syazana when we were swimming 100 meters. After the 2008 Sports Day, I had intially planned to swimming all alonr to just relax and laze around. There were these 2 normal technical girls from secondary two at the swimming complex and we mixed around. The best part was when they two poured water from the swimming pool onto the back of my body as I was sitting at the edge of the pool. They couldn't enter the pool because they did not have swimming attires, and it would surely have been much more fun if they brought it.

There was this 2008 barbeque gathering where we just chilled out at Zhuang Xian's condominium and also wished farewell to our history teacher who trasnferred to Yishun Junior College. When darkness conquered the blue skies, I stripped in front of Juliana and swam into the pool with my jeans and so did a handful of my friends. Zhuang Xian told us not to swim but we just ignored him. The last of these moments were when I went for my business club activity at Sentosa. After the activity, I planned to go swimming all alone but I asked two girls if they wanted to come along because they also wanted to laze around, and they did. The scenery was beautiful because the sun was setting and the sleazy environment. Both of them however did not swim but just played with the water because they did not know how to swim. It was a memorable moment because it was the first time I swam with strangers and chatted with them at the sea. Ending off, I would like to encourage people to get off your facebooks and online games and go for a swim right now!
